Assetto Corsa?

So I've been recently debating whether or not I should buy Assetto Corsa if it goes on sale one day.
The main problem for me is that I play on a keyboard, and I've heard from a good chunk of people that racing with a keyboard is absolutely horrible. I'm willing to compromise on other aspects like graphics or difficulty, but having shit controls is a huge turn away for me.

So I guess my two questions are; is it true that racing a car with a keyboard is really annoying/tedious? And if it is annoying, is it a stupid idea to look away from a potentially great game just because the controls are subpar?

For a racing 'simulator'/more realistic racing game like that, you'd want a wheel and pedals to play it. It's playable on keyboard (presumably), but generally speaking being able to have partial throttle and steering that isn't lock to lock would make it much more fun. Otherwise, you're stuck tapping keys repeatedly to achieve that.
